Morning Musings: Psalm 42 - For a day that’s just a little heavier

Sometimes life is extra heavy.
Pain, loss, transition, heartache and the unknown…
the burdens and challenges feel particularly weighty.

I know that what I need is more of Jesus.

My spirit in me cries out like the psalmist describes:
as a deer pants for water.

But the day must begin,

So I set my phone to a playlist of worship music and I step into the shower,
hoping the hot water will ease some of the physical pain and
the songs will bring some peace to the unease in my heart.

“You are my strength when I am weak
You are the treasure that I seek
You are my all in all.

Seeking you as a precious jewel
Lord to give up I’d be a fool
You are my all in all.

Jesus Lamb of God,
Worthy is your name”

And I hear a whisper in my heart –

Is He my all in all?
Jesus, are you enough for me?

“Taking my sin, my cross, my shame
Rising again, I bless your name
You are my all in all

When I fall down you pick me up
When I am dry you fill my cup
You are my all in all.

Jesus Lamb of God
Worthy is your name”

(song written by Dennis Jernigan)

Yes, Jesus, you are enough for me.
Thank You for the reminder.
I needed that.

Psalm 42

(For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah.)

As a deer longs for flowing streams,
so I long for you, God.
I thirst for God, the living God.
When can I come and appear before God?

My tears have been my food day and night,
while all day long people say to me,
“Where is your God?”
I remember this as I pour out my heart:
how I walked with many,
leading the festive procession to the house of God,
with joyful and thankful shouts.

Why, my soul, are you so dejected?
Why are you in such turmoil?
Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him,
my Savior and my God.

I am deeply depressed;
therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan
and the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your billows have swept over me.

The Lord will send his faithful love by day;
his song will be with me in the night—
a prayer to the God of my life.

I will say to God, my rock,
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go about in sorrow
because of the enemy’s oppression?”
My adversaries taunt me,
as if crushing my bones,
while all day long they say to me,
“Where is your God?”
Why, my soul, are you so dejected?
Why are you in such turmoil?
Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him,
my Savior and my God.
